J. R. Fugett Title

J.R. Fugett portrait

Cornell University graduate, Joseph R. Fugett, was a respected teacher and Principal in the West Chester area for many years.  The Gay Street Elementary School was renamed the Joseph R. Fugett School upon his retirement to honor his many years of dedicated service.  The school closed in the 1980's and the honorary name switched to what was then East Junior High School and is now the present day J.R. Fugett Middle School.

Joseph R. Fugett's son, Mr. Jean S. Fugett, and his grandson recently visited J.R. Fugett Middle School in February 2008.  Here they are pictured with our principal Mr. Morris.

Mr. Jean S. Fugett, J.R. Fugett's son, has been inducted into the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He is the first African American to join the society in the state of Maryland. Jean’s grandmother, Electa Josephine Bakeman Fugett, was a direct descendent of Henry Bakeman who participated in the Revolutionary War.
