J. R. Fugett Title

J.R. Fugett portrait

Cornell University graduate, Joseph R. Fugett, was a respected teacher and Principal in the West Chester area for many years.  The Gay Street Elementary School was renamed the Joseph R. Fugett School upon his retirement to honor his many years of dedicated service.  The school closed in the 1980's and the honorary name switched to what was then East Junior High School and is now the present day J.R. Fugett Middle School.

Joseph R. Fugett's son, Mr. Jean S. Fugett, and his grandson recently visited J.R. Fugett Middle School in February 2008.  Here they are pictured with our principal Mr. Morris.

Mr. Jean S. Fugett, J.R. Fugett's son, has been inducted into the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He is the first African American to join the society in the state of Maryland. Jean’s grandmother, Electa Josephine Bakeman Fugett, was a direct descendent of Henry Bakeman who participated in the Revolutionary War.

Ode to Brad Van Pelt

ODE TO BRAD VAN PELT A WORTHY OPPONENT

My brother Tony Fugett always has fun telling the story about one of my battles with All-Pro Linebacker Brad Van Pelt at Giant Stadium.  His stated six foot five inches seemed more like six foot nine when I peeked up at him from my three point stance, just before the snap.

I know what an All Pro Linebacker looks like. In 1972, I was thrown around daily by Dave Edwards my Cowboy teammate. Randy White as a rookie in training camp lined up against me everyday in training camp as a stand up linebacker. The Cowboys were loaded at linebacker at the time. Everyday, I got to work against Lee Roy Jordan, Chuck Howley, DD Lewis and Thomas Hollywood Henderson. More about them at another time.

I write today to honor Brad. Tony gets a twinkle in his eye when he sets the scene…:”Jean was pumped; playing in New York was always a big game for him, especially going against an All Pro outside linebacker. His assignment on virtually every running play to the right was Van Pelt.  If Jean blocked him on a running play the back gains yards but when Jean loses his battle, the team loses yards.”

Yea, I was pumped, and yea I loved to play well in New York. “Tony” I said to my brother, watch me on the first offensive play. I’m going to come off the line like Mike Ditka taught me, two fists to the solar plexus with a helmet to the chin finishing with a pancake, if possible.  So that is exactly what I did.

Tony finished the story: “Yea he did that and that got me pumped up.  The next play when jean lined up I expected the same. In stead, Van Pelt struck Jean with a devastating blow to his head and the back of his neck before he ever got out of his stance!”

Yea, that was true. The battle was joined and when the game ended, we shook hands. Brad we miss you. Rest in Peace

Jean Fugett Sr Making History

On Saturday January 24th, the Maryland Society Sons of the American

Revolution, founded in 1889, made history with the inauguration of our first African-American Chapter President Jean S. Fugett Sr.  He has been elected

President of the Col. John Eager Howard Chapter of Baltimore City. He of

Course   is a very capable and able member of our Society and will make a great Chapter President and the announcement of his election is a great honor for us. We

Must however acknowledge this significant event in our history at a time when we

Are also proud to see our nation inaugurate its first African-American U.S. President. It is a unique moment in history that must not pass without fanfare. Many of you may have met Jean and his family at National events as they have

been presented their membership certificates at successive Congresses by our

President Generals showing the growing diversity of the membership of our

Society.  Jean comes from a long line of able men too. His father was a

Teacher  and Principal and his grandfather was a former slave who worked hard in post

War  times to make a better life for his family.  His Patriot ancestor Henry

Bakeman  was a free African in New York who served as a private in the state Militia

And actively participated throughout the War.   Jean has instilled these strong traits in his family too. His stepson is  Reginald F. Lewis whose name now adorns the new African-American Museum in  Baltimore and his son Jean Jr is a former NFL football star and attorney.  Jean gives all the credit to his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Carolyn Fugett, for all his

success.  Carolyn too is proud of their family history and says her house has been nicknamed the ‘Heritage Trail’ because of all the old ancestral  pictures and portraits that adorn their walls. When asked what she will do when she runs out of wall space for all her paintings, she quipped “When I was in Italy, I saw the Sistine chapel had paintings on the ceiling so…”

This Week's Show Valentine Edition

Watching the President after watching A-Rod hoping both were telling the truth even though it hurt. While these truths may be self evident; who can you believe when talking about economic stimulus and clean major league baseball players over the last decade? The truth is out there somewhere. I'm sure Michael Phelps would like to thank A-Rod right now, talk about getting blown off the front page. So many stories so little time but we will do our best. This week Fugett Squared will be live in studio.

What do you think about these issues? Hope you can listen to the show tomorrow.

Listen to The Jean Fugett Show featuring  the Father and Son combo of "Fugett Squared" Tuesdays from 6-7pm on the new Baltimore Fox 1370AM. Listen live at www.fox1370.com
